My favorite Mexican - US. BORDER movies
1. El Norte (The North) - 1982
Storyline
Mayan Indian peasants, tired of being thought of as nothing more than "brazos fuertes" ("strong arms", i.e., manual laborers) and organizing in an effort to improve their lot in life, are discovered by the Guatemalan army. After the army destroys their village and family, a brother and sister, teenagers who just barely escaped the massacre, decide they must flee to "El Norte" ("the North", i.e., the USA). After receiving clandestine help from friends and humorous advice from a veteran immigrant on strategies for traveling through Mexico, they make their way by truck, bus and other means to Los Angeles, where they try to make a new life as young, uneducated, and illegal immigrants. a) Sinopsis
La Misma Luna trata de Carlitos de 9 años y su madre Rosario. Rosario vive en los Estados Unidos donde trabaja ilegalmente como un ama de llaves. Desea que su hijo tenga una vida mejor que la suya, así que envía dinero mensualmente a su hijo en México. Rosario y Carlitos hablan por teléfono cada viernes. A Carlitos le gusta que Rosario le describe los alrededores de la cabina telefónica para sentirse más acerca de ella. Carlitos vive con su abuela que está enferma. Cuando su abuela muere, Carlitos decide que quiere reunirse con su madre y empieza el viaje largo hacia los Estados Unidos. El viaje está lleno de obstáculos.
La Misma Luna primeramente fue mostrada en México el 27 Julio de 2007. La directora de la película se llama Patricia Riggens, una mexicana nacida en Guadalajara, Jalisco en 1970, cuya ha vivido la mayoría de su vida en los Estados Unidos. El guión fue escrito por la chicana Ligiah Villalobos. Los lugares de rodaje eran en Los Ángeles en Estados Unidos y Querétaro en México. La película es considerada como una coproducción mexicana – estadounidense.
b) Motivos por emigrar
No se dice explícitamente la razón de la migración de Rosario, pero parece que fue por razones económicas. El padre de Carlitos se ha ido, entonces es madre soltera y su situación todavía ees más difícil.
Cuando muere la abuela de Carlitos, se encuentra sin alguien a cuidarlo. La pareja vecina ha mostrado su interés a Carlitos, pero él sabe que solamente lo desean por los 400 dólares que su madre le envía mensualmente. Carlitos no quiere ser explotado, además extraña a su madre, por eso decide que va a cruzar la frontera para buscar su madre, y lo hace sin avisar a nadie.
c) Maneras de cruzar la frontera
Rosario había emigrado a los Estados Unidos antes que los eventos de la película transcurren. Sin embargo, durante la película, Rosario tiene un “flash-back” de la travesía suya. Cruzó un río con otros ilegales durante la noche. “La Migra” (apodo de Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de los Estados Unidos) apareció y todos los ilegales estuvieron detenidos, menos Rosario que se escondió empapada en el bosque.
Carlitos trabaja con una mujer, Doña Carmen, en un negocio coyotero. Le ayuda con el control de dinero. Un día aparecen dos hermanos estadounidenses, ofreciendo un servicio de transporte para llevar bebés escondidos en su coche a los Estados Unidos. La vecina les rechaza porque no les conoce, diciendo “que se vayan al carajo, hombre.” Sin embargo, dejan una tarjeta con su información de contacto con Carlitos. Cuando su abuela muere, Carlitos opta tomar contacto con los gringos y les paga con el salario del trabajo coyotero.
Llegando a la frontera de El Paso, con Carlitos ocultado abajo el asiento del coche, son detenidos por la seguridad porque el coche tiene registrado que falta pagar unas multas. El coche es confiscado y puesto en un parque cerrado, con Carlitos todavía adentro. Por la noche saldrá del carro, pero ahí pierde el dinero por accidente. Luego va a la estación de autobuses para pedir un boleto. Ahí dicen que no se puede vender boletos a personas menores de edad sin escolta de un adulto. En el baño encuentra un hombre desconocido que dice que le puede ayudar en cambio de dinero. El hombre obviamente es un drogadicta. Pero cuando Carlitos descubre que ya no tiene el dinero, el hombre de pone desesperado y y quiere que Carlitos le debe plata. Le lleva un barrio para “venderlo” a un chulo. Una vecina es espectadora de la situación y evita que el cambio criminal pase. Lleva Carlitos consigo a su casa. La mujer ofrece alimentos a hombres que trabajan ilegalmente en granjas estadounidenses.
El día siguiente Carlitos les acompaña a “chambear” recogiendo tomates. De repente aparece la Migra y todos los trabajadores huyen a todos lados y la mayoría están detenidos. Carlitos se esconde. Después de que se hayan ido la migra, Carlitos y un hombre, Enrique, sale de escondite. Juntos toman un raid a Tucson en un coche de unos músicos llamados La Banda Sonora, ahí consige trabajo lavando platos en un restaurante. Seguidamente toman el autobús a Los Ángeles para buscar a la madre de Carlitos. Al mismo tiempo, Rosario recibe una llamada de Doña Carmen, contándola que su mamá se ha muerto y que Carlitos se ha desaparecido. Rosario quiere regresar a México para buscar a su hijo. Antes que el autobús se va, vemos que Rosario ve a un chico hablando desde una cabina telefónica.
En Los Ángeles Carlitos y Enrique han dormido en un banco. Enrique va a comprar café, pero cuando regresa, ve que la policía ha detenido a Carlitos. Enrique decide distraerlas y echa café sobre la policía. Así detienen a Enrique, mientras que Carlitos escapa. Al fin, vemos que Carlitos encuentra el lugar de la cabina telefónica que su madre le ha descrito por el teléfono, y Rosario, por su parte, ha razonado que quizás aquél sería el lugar dónde Carlitos hubiera ido para encontrarla si él estuviera en Los Ángeles. Ahí se reúnen y la historia resulta en un final feliz.
d) Experiencia de los Estados Unidos
Rosario y su amiga mexicana se levantan todos los días antes de las 6 de la mañana para tomar varios autobuses a las casas donde trabajan. Vemos un contraste enorme entre los barrios donde residen los latinos y los barrios donde residen ciudadanos de clase media-alta. Rosario trabaja en dos casas. En la primera casa vive una mujer que está infeliz debido de que su pareja la está engañando con otra mujer. La acusa por no haber hecho su trabajo adecuadamente, aunque en realidad, es su propia culpa por no haber dado el recado del trabajo a Rosario. Así que la mujer de la casa decide despedirla. Rosario explica que el trabajo es muy importante para ella y que lo necesita, la mujer responde que seguramente va encontrar otro trabajo (“¡Tu todavía eres joven!”) Es obvio que la mujer pone sus frustraciones personales a la persona más débil, en este caso, Rosario. Luego Rosario le pide el salario de los últimos días antes que se va, la mujer lo niega, diciendo que no puede hacer nada con la falta de salario, porque no es una posibilidad ir a la policía si no tiene permiso de trabajar. No tiene ningún derecho, entonces ¡qué se vaya ya!
Aquí nos da cuenta de una situación hipotética en el mano de obra por la parte de los personas sin papeles. Trabajan por salarios mínimos, y en muchos casos son explotados porque sus jefes saben que no tendrán muchas posibilidades de quejarse.

sin nombre
i rented this movie a couple of days ago and watched it with torstein. its a movie thats a winner for bots genders by my opinion. its about a girl and her dad and uncle who attempts to cross the boarder from Mexico to the States illegally by train. we also follow the story of a guy that is a member of the latin american criminal brothership of the "maras". the maras are easily recognized by their many tattooes, foremost by facial tattoes. if a mara has commited murder, he will have a tear tattoed beside his eye. the boy wants to get out of it, and while on a misson (while robbing emigrants on the same train as the girl is, he decides to kill the other mara that is with him). there is a 11 year old kid there who is struggelig to be a part of the gang. the kid looks up to the old guy, and finds himself in a difficult position, having to return to the gang and telling them about what has happened. he swears to avenge the death of the leader mara, and promises to kill his former hero. the guy is now on the train, also trying to get out of the country and the mess hes left behind, knowing the maras dont forget easily and will be hunting for him and wont stop until they find him.
the escaped boy and the girl on the train finds each other and decides to jump off the train for an optional exit out of Mexico.
I recommend this movie alot!

Maras (or marabuntas) are gangs originating from Central American countries such as El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.
Maras activities range from drug trafficking and prostitution to assaults and burglaries. Almost all maras display tattoos on their bodies as a sign of their affiliation to their gang. "La vida por las maras" or "the life for the gang" is a very commonly used phrase by these gangs. The killing of innocents is part of some gangs' initiation process, most notably MS13, and these activities follow them for the rest of their lives.

the end is near
It's the end of the world as we know it...
I just watched 2012 with my brother Henrik. We are both suckers for doomsday movies. I think that science-ficton is fascinating because like to imagine how powerful nature in the worst-case-scenario can be....and how small human kind are in comparison... In the big picture, you know.
My history thus far with movies belonging to this category is rather long. As mentioned above, the 1996-Independence Day is a classic. Armageddon, I Robot, The Core, I am Legend are also on the list. The 1998-movie Deep Impact with teen-Frodo can also be mentioned. More recent movies can be Jake Gyllenhaal's The Day After Tomorrow, and Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds (hate that guy).
The rundown of most of the science-fiction movies from the last decade, is that the President of the United States of America is black and played my Morgan Freeman. The protagonists last name is Smith and usually ends up as the last living person on earth/saves mankind. At the top of this, he has helluva lotta cool frases throughout the movie - like: "No, you did NOT shoot that green shit at me!" or "(...)just a little anxious to get up there and whoop E.T.'s ass, that's all!" Which makes him look like the coolest most doable man on earth.
Although the last president of the Americas is not played by Morgan Freeman butDanny Glover Mel Gibsons sidekick in(Leathal Weapon), unfortunately, this movie is a cliché. The main character is played by the B-actor John Cusack (Must Love Dogs, Thin Red Line, Con Air), whom by my opinion doesn't quite measure up for the part. The movie is based on the the warning of the indigenous Mayan Calender, that has foreseen the end of the world for 2000 years, while the rest of the world have been oblivious. Tagline: We Were Warned. Cusack plays Jackson Curtis, a unsuccesful writer and a divorced man. He's bitter on his ex-wifes new boyfriend, who his own son seems to prefer to him. So he decides to take his kids on on a hiking trip to the Yellowstone National Park for some quality time to restore the lost harmony. Here he encounters a mad/genious conspirator, played by no other than Woody Harrelson, who sends out his warnings on his own radio channel from the Park. Slowly he begins to learn that the nature isn't as it should be and that there's some suspicious things going on with the army on the site. The ground starts to shake and make huge cracks dramatically in a grocery store. Curtis travels back to town, picks up his ex-wife and her new boyfriend. They miraculously makes their way through a collapsing city, inspired by 60 in Sixty Seconds and alot of luck. Then they manouvre themselves away in a mini airplan just as the entire city is sinking into the core of the earth. They are able to make their way to China in order to get on the giant modern "Noah's Ark" (which the government has been secretly constructing over the past two years in order to save mankind). There are also other important characters included in the movie, like the geologist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor - American Gangster, Love Actually). There are huge natural disasters, a lot of unlikely luck,and last minute resolutions. And it all comes down to a 158 minutes long motion picture. long.
Well, nothing I haven't seen before. Some of the scenes were very predictable. Fair enough for easy entertaining. I speculate that the director, german Roland Emmerich, plays on all the strings his paranoid american audience possibly have. Would it surprise you if I revealed that he was also behind The Day After Tomorrow,
Independence Day and Godzilla? Hehe.
I throw my dice and give it....a 4.
Afterwards Henrik and I discussed the movie over lasange and pizza at Pasta Centralen. What we found the most curious was that the italian President had patriotically chosen to stay with his country in stead of joining the Ark. I mean c'mon - I doubt Silvio Berlusconi would have gone down with his ship:p

denne uka er studieuke for oss ved HF. jeg, på en annen side, hadde konteeksamen i SPLA 101 (spansk grammatikk og fonetikk) på onsdag. jeg hadde ingen forhåpninger om å stå, siden jeg har prokastinert eksamenslesingen siden jeg fikk vite at jeg hadde strøket i sommer. denne eksamenen har fulgt meg overalt som en stor sort sky månedsvis., og quite frankly var jeg superklar bare å få den overstått, med ståkarakter eller ikke. det å ikke ha forhåpninger er kanskje en negativ tankegang., men jeg liker å tenke som Grinchen, som ikke ser frem til jul, for da blir han heller ikke skuffet når det blir kjipt:p
MEN! jeg tror jeg kommer til å stå denne gangen. man må ha 60% riktig for å stå, så det er jo ikke utelukket at jeg stryker denne gangen heller. men litt håp må man jo ha. hvis jeg stryker, kan jeg ta den oppigjen når jeg kommer tilbake fra utvekslingsåret mitt i Mexico; og kan sikkert spansk mye bedre da også.

Etter eksamen dro jeg, Alice og Elisabeth på kino og så "Engelen" - en film av Margaret Olin, som jeg er veldig fan av. Jeg ville egentlig se "Jenta som lekte me Ilden", men de andre hadde ikke sett eneren, så de ville se den før toeren. Men jeg angret IKKE. Engelen var en helt nydelig og rørende film og jeg gråt øynene mine ut. Maria Bonnevie portretterer en rusavhengig kvinne (venninnen til Olin i virkeligheten), og vi får innsyn i livshistorien hennes, inklidert barndommen i et voldelig og ruspreget hjem. Jeg anbefaler den på det høyeste.
Etter kinoen satt jeg meg på buss til trening. Treneren vår er syk for tiden, så vi styrer oss selv. Noen gutter fra herrelaget var med å spilte med oss. Det var jo artig, men legger merke til hvor mye bedre teknikk vi jenter har... Men i gjengjeld så spiller de jo i to divisjoner under oss da:p

American Teen
I watched this socalled "docu-soap" along with Inger Marie yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised of its quality. The movie is basically a modern day - real "Breakfast Club". The film teamed followed five students in a high school in a small town in Indiana during their senior year. The high school community is white, red and christian. I found this setting extremely familiar to my own surroundings during my exchange year back in Elmore, Ohio... The five kids, all representatives for different cliques and types in HS - the geek, the artsy, the jock, the prep. As wikipedia describes them:
Hannah Bailey - the "rebel." Hannah is an artist, musician and wannabe filmmaker whose liberal views are not a good fit for the conservative small-town culture of Warsaw. Early in the year, her long-time boyfriend breaks her heart, causing her to miss weeks of school while she recovers from the heartbreak, and later, while she deals with possible embarrassment at school for missing so many days. She dates Mitch for a while during the year, but their relationship causes friction with his clique of friends, and he breaks up with her via text message. At the year's end, she heads to San Francisco to live (and eventually go to college). In the film's credits, it's revealed she left the west coast for New York City to study filmmaking.
Colin Clemens - the "jock." Colin is a well liked, humorous student whose primary focus during the year is athletics. As the star basketball player for Warsaw, he realizes the year is a make-or-break opportunity to impress scouts and get a scholarship. To not get a scholarship will likely mean enrolling in the military - something his father constantly brings up through the film.
Megan Krizmanich - the "queen bee" or "princess." Megan is a popular student in many ways. She is academically talented, popular, and involved in many extracurricular activities. Her ultimate goal is to get into the University of Notre Dame, something that many of her family members have done before her. She is manipulative and mean but she is also humanized by the portrayal of her own social and emotional struggles.
Mitch Reinholt - the "heartthrob." Mitch is popular at school because of his easygoing ways, his good looks, and his sports talent (he's a teammate of Colin's). He is the least featured of the five primary students, and is even left off some versions of the film's movie poster. Mitch features prominently into the story when he starts dating Hannah.
Jake Tusing - the "nerd" or "gamer." Jake is an introverted student whose hobbies are the marching band and video games. He longs to find and keep a girlfriend, and much of his storyline revolves around his dating life.
Of course, being a rebel without a cause myself, I identified the most with Hannah:) Honestly though, I think I was more of a mixture of the prep and the artsy back in my senior year in HS. I had a preppy style, but I wasn't uptight. Nowadays I like to change my style according to how I feel that specific day. I can be preppy, sure - but I can also go for the bohemian look, or be laid back with Carlings clothes, or be a sexy vamp by night. I'm free to decide, and that's what's great about it. My style is as diverse as my personality.

Conclusion: I liked this movie alot. Me recommend. Ps: Has won Sundance- award of best documentary in 2008.

Before Night Falls
yesterday I watched the movie version of "Antes de nochesza" (by the autobiography of the cuban revolucionary and gay author Reinaldo Areinas); called "Before Night Falls". It was made in 2001 and is directed by Julian Schnabel. The movie is fucking brilliant and I insist upon everyone to watch it. The first time I saw it was when I studied in Cuba, where it was a part of the curriculum.
I think it demonstrates fairly well that socialism is not for everyone. Castro himself said that those who were not revolucionary (in his meaning the gays) was not wanted in the country either. Therefore he arranged emigration for the homosexuals, and put those who wanted on boats to the States). Others were places in camps for gay people, where their sought to re-eduacate them to be proper citizens (heteros). Isn't that just sick?! These camps were similar to the camps in Polen, Germany and Spain during the WW2; campos de trabajo).

What I find funny about this movie is that its ulitimately in english (whereas the characters speak english with a spanish accents), but sometimes swiches over to spanish, without that this comes off as unnatural.

Twilight
me, line and anja went to the movies to see Twilight the other day. the Twilight triology is based upon a serie of books by Stephenie Meyer. she were a stay-at-home mom with too much time on her hands when she started writing the first Twilight book. the story is inicially about a teenage girl who risks everything when she falls in love with a vampire, came to Meyer in a dream. she had never written anything professional before, but the book became a best seller in the Und. States. In 2008 Twilight were adapted into a blockbuster film, starring the daughter of talk show host John Stewart, Kristen Stewart (as Bella Swan), known from movies like Into the Wilde and Panic Room and heart-breaker Robert Pattinson (as vampire Edward Cullen), who's also known as the role of Cedrick Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Catherine Hardwicke directed the film, with the script being written by Melissa Rosenberg.
I found this movie romantic, interesting, and exciting. I loved the soundtrack and went straight home to download it. Pattinson is also a musician, and has constributed with to self-composed piano plays in the soundtrack. I understand how Twilight has become such a phenomenon overeseas. I myself can only go with the flow and say that i absolutely loved it. I can't wait for the next movie:)

today i had my first lecture in spanish. i didnt follow. i felt hopeless and irritated. it could've been worse though; i could've understood nada. which wasn't the case. i just need to create good routines and then everything will get better.
after the overwhelming lecture i took a stroll downtown. when depressed, i shop. i bought a audry hepburn-collection dvd (including the devine breakfast a tiffany's) and then i decided to buy a spanish film to watch. "y tu mamá también" is a famous movie i've been meaning to buy for a long time.
i went to cafe opera with my cousin line. we chatted about life and my spanish difficulties over a coup of cafe mocca and greek salad. que delicioso.
when returning to la casa i watched it. its sexy, raw, brutal and interesting. and very depriving at the end. diego luna (dirty dancing), and the to-die-for-hot gael garcía bernal (diarios de motocicleta) were a great duo along with Ana López Mercado, whom i know nothing about in real life. go see this movie. i think i love it.
but i didnt understand if julio and tenoch (gael and diego) were supposed to be gay. was that the irony of all the gay jokes along the way? no comprendo. y bueno.

Grattis med dagen Marthe! 20 år! eg satt å laga kort til ho langt på natt i går. eg gjør slikt for mine venner fordi eg er sympatisk. pluss at eg har litt fritidssysleproblemer.
eg hadde liten kollokviemøte med exphil gjengen marianne og camilla. læreren vår tok seg til og med ekstra tid og svarte på noen av spm våre. det går sakte fremover. endelige innlevering er 15 des., så har tid.

the wackness and the revelations surrounding my reserved big brother
last night i went to the movies with my big brother. he also lives in Bergen, and from time to time we take the time off to socialize. he first asked if i wanted to see "burn after reading", but ive already seen that. then he asked if i wanted to see the new bond movie, but ive also seen that. he criticized my active movie-going, but i excused myself by referring to my rightful procrastination of reading in advance of my upcoming exam. so we decided to see "The Wackness"
i hadn't even heard about it before. but this movie was fuckin great. its about this kid (Josh Peck) in NYC who'd just graduated from HS and the hot summer following it. he's a drug dealer and works hard to earn money for college. along with his family's economic problems he is stuggling with the girls, more spesifically about losing his virginity. he goes to a shrink to talk about his issues. he trades services with the shrink in exchange of marijuana. the elderly shrink (Ben Kingsley) has his own problems. together they develope a unique friendship. at the same time, he falls in love with a girl from his class (Famke Janssen). the girl is his shrink's step daughter. together they spend the summer together. but everythings about to have an abrupt change when he says the L-word...
this movie is both fun and intelligent. i think it sums up the heat of NYC in the mid 90's with music influences such as Notorious B.I.G and the death of Kurt Cobain. Ben Kingsley, who stars as Dr. Jeffrey Squires, must take alot of credit for this movie. he plays an old and eccentric junkie with alot of humoristic tendencies. i recommend this movie highly.

after the movie me and by brother went for a beer. my brother doesn't really share much of his private life. not even with his family. it has always bothered me abit. a couple of weeks ago a bird whispered me in the ear and told me he has a girlfriend. whom he has never mentioned. when i confronted him he refused to talk about it. but last night i brought up the subject again, and he actually answered my curiousities. i now know abit about his lady friend. i know the hard facts as how old she is and where they met. the next step is that maybe i can meet her. but in his tempo, im sure thats not gonna happen until they're engaged in a 5-years time.
today, saturday, is his 25th birthday. i shall bake him a cake on sunday.

why does it always hail on me?
sunday. the day everone's hung over and everyone looks like crap. its simply the day no one looks good. well, i decided to change that. i woke up in good spirit and decided to do my hair and put on something qute. i went to the library and read (as the new and good studend i have decided to become). everything was going well until, da-da, the weather caught me off guard. again. i seem to see a pattern concerning this problem in Bergen... it was raining rediculously at first, but then it started to freakin hail. that sucks.
at night i went to the movies with costudent Audi and we saw the new Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace". the only two available seats left were front row. that was quite annoying at first...having to turn your head in order to get "the big picture" etc. it was a great movie. you should see it. the ukranian bond girl, Olga Kurylenko, is FYI seriously beautiful. i will put a pic up:

efficiency, christina and guys not getting it
its november 5th. its exactly 16 days until im going to fail my SV100 exam, and im taking it disturbingly calm. not quite true; i have decided to start studying every day until the exam. every day. you have my electronic words.
my efficient day of november 5th:
10-12: Ex.phil lexture. Unbelievably dull.
12-14: Library (first time actually) with Christina. I read some SV100 shit and tutored Christina in her spanish skills.
14.30-15: Lunch with Christina at a very cosey cafe next to the library. Had a chocolate cake and a cafe latte. Very nice.
15-17: Shoe-shopping with Christina. 500 kr.
17-18: Made and ate a delicious dinner with spaghetti bolognese etc. Very nice. My cooking abilities are improving by the minute.
18-19.30: Went to the gym. Ran nearly 30 minutes on the treadmill. Pat on my back. Lifted some weights.
19.30: Showered at the gym at sat a bit in the sauna. I know its bad for the skin but sometimes the temptation overwhelms me. For some odd reason I do my best thinking in the steamy room... Just look here:
20: Im walking back home and a message beeped in on my cell. Hell. It was this guy I met on a party last saturday. He is absolutely not my type, but he seems to think we hit it off; because he has been sending me alot of messages. I have reluctantly answered 2/3 times, but only by politeness and objetivity. Most cases, person no.1 does get the picture when person no.2 clearly backs off. But not this guy, ohh no. He just keeps on pushing it! First he asked me ("chica hermosa") to go on a hike to one of the city's mountain peeks (Fløyen). I would normally have thought was interesting idea for a date, only I dont KNOW the guy and I dont want to. And he asks my to go on a freaking mountain top? What the heck... I declined, and he asks me what I will do in the weekend. I say: Im going to my parents house. He says: Oh okay, maybe we can hang out next weekend then? Oh.my.god. Does he have AIDS or something? - Sorry, very untasteful of me. Its just...I get so annoyed with guys that just dont know when to call it a quit!
Furthermore:
21-22.55: Movies with Christina: "Burn After Reading", you know, that new movie with Brad Pitt, John Malkovich and George Clooney. Thats some weird shit man. You'd have to watch it, cus' I can't start analyzing this movie here. Black humor. Weird. Funny. Just the way I like it. Brad Pitt was brilliant.
Serious quality time with Christina today. I hope she hasn't grown tired of me yet:p

I am Legend
After sleeping unsatisfyingly 3 hours last night, I was in a pretty lousy condition during my four hour lextures today. When I came back home I decided to take the day 'off' and be lazy. I finally saw "I am Legend", a pirate copy i bought this summer in Torrevieja.
Will Smith is great. Always. I already had great expectations to the movie based on Smith's appearance. He always seem to star in some kind of sci-fi movie and ends up saving the world (hence titles such as "Independence Day", "I Robot", "Hancock" and "Man in Black"). They're rediculous but highly entertaining.
Smith didn't disappoint in "I am Legend" either.
I was scared of the virus-infected creatures and I almost sobbed when Sam died (the dog). Smith's portrayed very well how man eventually will turn crazy without human-touch. Because he is the only human left on the earth, he desperately tried to keep sane by every day talking to mannequins in the video store.

The digital graphics aspects of the movie weren't that good, but I liked how they'd transformed the streets of NY to a ghost town. But what was up with those deers running around? Didn't quite get that. Furthermore I loved how his character referred to Bob Marley as a genious and kept on playing "Don't worry, every little thing is gonna be alright", even though he supposedly was the last man on earth and had to deal with demonized beings that wants to kill him. The humoristic twist and irony in the movie is a nice comic relief. I particulary loved this quote (on Bob Marley):
"He had this idea. It was kind of a virologist idea. He believed that you could cure racism and hate... literally cure it, by injecting music and love into people's lives. When he was scheduled to perform at a peace rally, a gunman came to his house and shot him down. Two days later he walked out on that stage and sang. When they asked him why - He said, "The people, who were trying to make this world worse... are not taking a day off. How can I? Light up the darkness."
Will Smith is a sexy beast. Always have been. When I googled for a cover pic, this turned up:
Okay? Will Smith appears not to be the first actor playing this legend-role. I haven't seen this original(?) but I can somehow foresee that I prefer the newer addition.

fascination: vicky cristina barcelona
"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is a 2008 film by Academy Award-winning writer-director Woody Allen. The film was shot in Avilés, Barcelona and Oviedo. The plot centers around two American women, Vicky and Cristina, vacationing in Barcelona. There, the women meet an artist, and the three quickly develop a relationship. The artist, however, is still enamored of his mentally unstable ex-wife [from Wikipedia].
I went to the movies last night with my cousin and we saw this movie. In the past I have never been a big fan of the works on Allen, but this movie surprised me in a positive way. I felt strangly inspired by it afterwards and wanted to paint. Silly.
This is a seemingly plotless movie, yet I found it undeniably interesting. Javier Bardem stars as the Don Juan character Juan Antonio. Bardem is a brilliant actor, and is probably one of my favorite actors in the world. The 39-year old spanish actor has starred in great ovies as "Before Night Falls" (2000), a movie I recommend highly. Last year he portrayed the grotesque serial killer Anton Chigurh in the bizarre movie "No Country for Old Men".
Vicky and Cristina are two american friends who go to Barcelona for the summer.
Scarlett Johansson, in the role of Cristina, is a spontaneous and unsure girl who chases highs, while her friend Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is practical and traditional in her approach to love and commitment. They encounter Juan Antonio,
who is an eccentric artist who offers them to fly to Oviedo with him to get to know each other better. This is the beginning of fast and dramatic relationships, whereas Juan Antonio's ex-wife María Elena(Penelope Cruz) also enter the story.
María Elena is nevrotic and charming, and has recently attempted suicide. After being hospitalized, Juan Antonio takes her into his home. Being lovers, Cristina also shares recidence with Juan Antonio. The three of them develops a harmonic relationship. Cristina persues her passion for photography,
while María Elena and Juan Antonio continues their artistic duties. They threesome inspire each other. Vicky, on the other hand, is also attracted to Juan Antonio, even though she has recently married her reliable but unromantic Doug. I absolutely loved Cruz's portrayal in the movie. She definietly deserves an Oscar nomination for the part. One of the quotes I really liked was when Maria Elena stated that "only unfulfilled love can be romantic". Isn't that just so true? The end is vert dramatic and unfulfilling. I liked that the movie was reckless but realistic. It could've happend. What I loved the most was the scenery, Barcelona. I visited the city this summer, and recognized many of the most famous places, like the rooftop of the Casa Milà, Cathedral of Santa Eulalia and the the Sagrada Família, all gotic constructions by the famous architect Gaudí. Vicky is getting her masters in Catalan Identity, a project spawned by her love of the works of Gaudí.
